Replacing a 40-Year-Old Legacy System

RWB Consulting Engineers was selected to design a state-of-the-art Central Utilities Plant (CUP) for the American Airlines Flight Training Academy. This new facility was developed to replace an aging 40-year-old plant that previously supported multiple critical components of the airline’s training and operations infrastructure. The outdated system serviced the Flight Training Academy Campus, the Training and Conference Center Campus, and the Southern Reservations Office Building.

Modern Utility Infrastructure for Mission-Critical Facilities

Now fully operational, the new Central Utilities Plant provides significant improvements in efficiency, reliability, and capacity. The upgraded plant ensures uninterrupted utility service for American Airlines’ essential training and administrative operations.

High-Capacity Cooling Systems

The facility is equipped with six 1,000-ton chillers, designed to deliver more than 14,000 gallons per minute (GPM) of chilled water. This robust cooling capacity is crucial for supporting both occupant comfort and the technology-intensive environments within the Flight Training Academy and adjacent buildings.

On-Site Power Generation Capabilities

To further enhance operational resilience, the plant includes four 2.5-megawatt (MW) generators. Collectively, these generators can produce enough electricity to power approximately 7,600 homes, ensuring that critical operations continue even during utility outages. This level of redundancy is vital for maintaining uptime at the training center and reservation systems that operate around the clock.
